Patrol is often considered the backbone of every police department. Almost all police investigations or contacts begin within the area of patrol. Patrol officers respond to calls for service and conduct necessary follow-up investigations. Patrol officers are trained to detect crime, arrest criminals, and conduct preventive patrol techniques to deter crime. By utilizing the philosophy of community-orientated policing, patrol officers work together with the village residents to develop lasting relationships to solve and prevent crime. Patrol officers are also expected to stop motorists who violate the traffic laws. Distracted or unsafe drivers are a danger to themselves and others.
